Case Study: The British Optical Association Library at the College of Optometrists

The College of Optometrists is the professional, scientific and examining body for optometry in the UK. Its library is the best used and largest of its subject area in the world.

Stock ...

7500 books; 70 journal titles; plus CD-ROMS, audio-visual material, Government publications, British Standards, theses, an historical collection of early works on vision and optics and the archives of the British Optical Association, and the British Contact Lens Association Library.

Users ...

The lending and reference library has round 12000 users from all over the country and worldwide who use the library’s resources in person, by post or online.

The challenge ...

Librarian, Jan Ayres, worked with SEROTA library furniture on two libraries when she was at the Royal College of Midwives and chose SEROTA in a competitive three-way bid for the furniture requirements at her new post at the College of Optometrists. The College of Optometrists had old shelving which had suffered three moves and was falling to pieces.

The solution ...

SEROTA library furniture was brought in to completely replan the whole library. The first tranche was completed in January 2004 and SEROTA designed and supplied the first batch of shelving, a journals display cabinet and cabinet for rare books. The second tranche included a reading table and chairs and an issue desk.

Benefits ...

"Michael Serota was the only representative of the three companies who listened to our requirements and produced a first draft plan which reflected those needs accurately. One of his competitors got the name of our college wrong and another only increased our shelving space by around 20%.

“Michael Serota is also very good at supporting librarians in communication and negotiations with other decision-makers in the organisation."
